At Banner Literacy, we believe exceptional reading instruction begins with deep expertise in how children learn to read. Our approach is informed by more than 15 years of hands-on work with students and families, supervision of literacy intervention programs in elementary schools, clinical work in urban and rural settings, and ongoing study of how written language works.

That experience has taught us that effective reading intervention starts with understanding why a child is struggling. We begin with careful diagnostic assessment and consider neuropsychological evaluations when they are part of a student’s history. Rather than relying on a one-size-fits-all program, we use this information to identify specific gaps in foundational skills and design instruction around the individual learner.

Instruction is explicit, systematic, and sequential. We teach the logic of written English directly through orthographic study—how words are spelled—and morphology—how words are structured. Concrete teaching materials developed by Banner Literacy help make abstract language concepts tangible as students work toward independent, fluent reading.

We also recognize that speaking, reading, and writing develop together. Comprehension, vocabulary, and writing are integrated throughout intervention, allowing students to strengthen these interconnected skills rather than practice them in isolation.

Progress isn’t left to chance. We monitor growth regularly, adjust instruction as a child develops, and encourage students to talk through their own thinking as they read and problem-solve — building both skill and confidence along the way.
