Considering my friend’s dilemma, I thought back to my course Content Methods in the Elementary Grades at Northwestern this semester. I asked my students to compose multi-genre reports on one of their heroes. One student, in particular, wrote an excellent report on Lin Manuel Miranda. This same student is also under my supervision as a student-teacher of a fourth-grade class. A few weeks ago, I had the pleasure of observing her class as she shared her report on Lin Manuel Miranda with her students. Afterward, I saw excitement among her fourth-graders as they began planning to write about their heroes.
Confident that my young friend could replicate my student teacher’s experiences, I recommended that she try multi-genre reports with her students. After we discussed the details of the project, she was sold on trying multi-genre projects in her class!
